CLEAR LAKE, Iowa — Ben Furleigh has written a memoir that covers more than six decades of life experiences, from growing up on a small Iowa strawberry farm to serving in local government, building a manufacturing career, reconnecting with biological family members, and retiring at age 56.
The book, An Iowa Farm Boy: A Collection of Stories and a Journey of Discovery, brings together stories from Furleigh’s life in Iowa and beyond. It follows a path that includes adoption, public service, business leadership, financial independence, health challenges, and family history.
Rather than focusing on a single period of life, the memoir moves across decades.
Furleigh grew up on a century-old family farm near Clear Lake, Iowa. He later earned a degree in Agricultural Business from Iowa State University and completed a congressional internship in Washington, D.C., working in U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley’s office. He went on to spend more than 30 years in manufacturing and quality engineering while remaining active in civic and community affairs.
Part of the book centers on his search for identity and family connections. Furleigh shares the story of being adopted and later reuniting with biological family members. Other chapters draw from his experiences as president of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity during a rebuilding period, a candidate for Iowa State Representative, and a member of the Clear Lake City Council, where he served for 12 years.
The memoir also explores broader themes of hard work, leadership, civic responsibility, personal accountability, and long-term financial planning.
Furleigh says the book is intended not only as a record of his experiences but also as a way to preserve stories and lessons for future generations.
Today, he spends time writing, volunteering, studying economics and public policy, and reflecting on the experiences that shaped his life.
Publication details are expected to be announced by the publisher.
